The Adventures of Gaka and Shebon

February 27th, 2012 by mica
With two children taking turns with fevers and coughs, we’ve had a lot of downtime at the house lately.  Sometimes I get a little stir-crazy, but mostly I’ve enjoyed some unstructured, unhurried time to be with them.  And much has emerged from their play.

For some time now, Austin has been calling herself “Gaka.”  When she does something a little mischievous or silly, I ask her who was responsible, and she says with a smile, “Oh, Gaka.”  Just recently Ronan has assumed the name “Shebon.”  I eavesdropped on their 2 hour chat session the other night during a sleepover and they were talking on and on about Gaka and Shebon and joking about switching names with each other.

The joys of play dough:

Out of our play dough sessions came a new jewelry line.  Rings:

And bracelets, of course.  Ronan proceeded to hide play dough bracelets throughout the house for Austin to discover, scavenger hunt style.

Ronan is a boy who collects treasures and makes presents for people many, many times a day.  It is how he shows affection.  Today he probably delivered 10 packages to myself, Austin, the neighbor, his friends at school.  He loves to give and doesn’t really expect anything in return.  Here he is, at the height of his fever.  He decided that he might feel better if Austin made him a package and so she carefully chose a bag, decorated it, and found presents around the house for her brother.

Before I end this post and my memory fades, I want to include a few of my favorite Austin and Ronan quotes from the past week.

After sucking on his first-ever Gobstopper, Ronan happily said “that makes my mouth sweet!”

We were discussing outer space and I asked the kids why we didn’t live on other planets.  Austin, without skipping a beat, answered “No milk.”  Ronan said, “Because they’re not perfect.”  Sounds like fitting answers for both kids:)

And lastly, today, when Ronan didn’t want to answer one of my questions, he politely stated: “I’m taking a mouth rest.”  Good one. I should try that too.
