The Secret Place

November 8th, 2010 by gentry
After a year of searching, this weekend we closed on a little cabin in the mountains. It’s nothing special in terms of architecture or even location, except that it’s winter-accessible and yet smack in the middle of thousands of acres of forest service woods. Here’s the view from our window:

That green won’t be green for long — in fact it snowed 6 inches last night (we weren’t there to see it, sadly). Winter is fast approaching and that means preparations. In this case, we’re primarily focused on getting a fireplace. Steve (everyone just calls him Angel) shows michelle where it might go.

In the meantime, the cabin has a pellet stove, which though devoid of romance does do a good job of warming the place up. Birdie is content to sit in front of it:

Of course the real point of a cabin is to get outside of it. When I was grown up I distinctly remember my dad taking me and my brother to hunt for a “secret place” where we could have a campfire at night and watch the sunset. The Secret Place didn’t stay secret for long (here was where I learned the term “spilled the beans”) but it did stay our spot for long evenings outdoors.

So when we got to the cabin I grabbed Ronan and we went out hunting for a suitable secret spot on our land near the border of national forest…

A little less than an hour later we had a fire pit. Ronan was particularly helpful in clearing out the stones and weeds inside.

Later that evening it was time to test our new spot.

I’d say we’ve got a winner… There’s our blue+ red cabin in the background.

Of course there’s little point in having a campfire if you’re not going to roast ‘Smores. Fortunately momma was way ahead of us on that front.

Ronan had us in stitches when he proudly proclaimed that “this is the best sandwich I’ve ever eaten!”

Here’s to many more nights at the Secret Place.
