Cabin Fever

February 6th, 2010 by mica
Two weekends ago Michelle, Ronan and I took a trip out to the mountains to stay at a friend’s cabin for the weekend.

It wasn’t too difficult of a drive from the bay to get there, but that was just the beginning of the story. Once we parked the car we had to don backpacks with all food and clothes for our trip, encourage Ro to hop in a sled, and make a nearly mile trek over loosely packed snow. Bear in mind the next Bunderwood is due in just over two weeks, so Michelle was being a real trooper.

Our arrival followed some pretty heavy snowfall in the area and as we neared the cabin things got a bit more complicated. That’s the top of the front door you’re seeing, itself atop a porch some 8-10 feet in the air.

It took a while to dig our way to the front door while the now poured down. Ronan wasn’t exactly excited by the wait and started to get pretty cold — all the more motivation to shovel very quickly! Once inside we started a fire, turned on the heat, and bundled Ro up in blankets. It took about half an hour for him to thaw :)

I brought my granddad’s leica with me and I think it does a better job than me of capturing the feel of the place. For all the work of getting out to a remote cabin in the middle of a sea of snow, the reward is an incredible feeling of escape and going back to the basic of life. Just staying warm, eating, sleeping, walking a bit — these become important enough and joy in themselves.

Ronan’s been talking about “da cabin” ever since we got back…

Luxurious transportation…

…in heaven on earth.

Short visits are way better than living in ice and snow 24-7. Grrat part of your outing was avility to go home after a couple of days.
That’s a lot of snow to shovel.
