The Ball Pit

February 12th, 2015 by mica
Tuesday was an epic day for Ronan.  The 200 plastic balls that he had carefully researched and bought arrived on our doorstep, and he could build his very own ball pit!IMG_1649

Now let me explain what “carefully researched” means as nothing with Ronan is ordinary.  Ronan has been saving up money and thinking through how he’d like to spend it for some time now.  He’s discovered the review section on amazon and reads through customer ratings and comments.  (He particularly likes their star rating system).  Over the past week, he’s looked over all the different versions of Snap Circuits (and read the accompanying instruction manuals to learn about the projects they promise).  He’s researched every chemistry set out there and then he remembered a dream he had to build a ball pit!
So, he began reading reviews on the best quality balls for the lowest price and came across this set, complete with its own carrying case.  He even went about selecting a purchase that would have free shipping and was delighted to find out that the balls came with no state tax!  After much deliberation, Ronan felt good about his purchase and we made the transaction.  He handed me the cash.  We tracked the package over the next few days from Virginia to Tennessee to Oakland and finally to our home in Palo Alto.  It really is pretty amazing when you think of how far those little plastic things traveled…IMG_1654

What I’m hinting at is that the purchase was nowhere near an impulse buy.  It was a carefully thought out selection and thus the source of much anticipation.  Here the kids are doing their happy dance, getting ready to dump the balls into a second bathtub.

All kinds of games have come up, like dumping the balls on each other’s heads or cascading them down the stairs.

Here we are in the middle of a mad game of dodge ball:

I sort of geeked out with dinner and tried to find everything in a round shape to go with the “ball pit party” theme

It’s amazing how some cash in his pocket has been the source of so much learning for Ronan.  And I dare say he has come up with a winning idea after seeing how much fun they are having with the balls!
