Bake Sale

August 22nd, 2013 by mica

This is one of my favorite Ronan stories of all time.  I can’t believe it has taken me so long to write it!  It somehow disappeared into the archives-

A few months ago, through a long thread of conversation, Ronan learned about drought and modern day occurrences in Africa.  At once he started trying to figure out how he could help the people of Africa.  Through my sister-in-law, we connected with a little boy in Uganda, Joseph, who is dying of cancer.  Ronan immediately started collecting toys and money from his room to send to him and became determined to raise money for this little boy.  He would ask every person he met on the street, quite literally, to donate to his cause.

Together, we came up with the idea of a bake sale and our friends and family rallied for the big day.

Austin was pretty excited about the treats and friends:)

The bake sale, combined with a few days of him soliciting donations, came out to $208.78.  This is Ronan’s collection– complete with books, jewels and other items he wants to send away to Joseph.

It was amazing to see him in action and to watch his strengths come out.  He was fearless in asking strangers to donate.  Here he is running to the church (a few houses down) with a plate of the last few baked goods.  He worked his way through the crowd until all the baked goods were sold.  One lady said she’d watch out for him in the philanthropy circles in 20 years.

May not take him that long to show up there:)  It was a great morning.
