Daddy’s the cool one

July 29th, 2008 by gentry

Sure, sure: mommy means food and safety and all the warm fuzzy feelings you could possibly imagine, but sometimes a boy needs to shake it up a bit. To feel the wind in his hair. To chase fast women in fast cars.  And for that, you need your papa.

OK, maybe not, but roll with me here.

Ronan got a nifty Corvette shirt from his Uncle John to go with the car that his dad and granddad keep trading, and, well, that meant a ride or something like it.

At first little Ro found the controls hard to reach. He’d get on the gas and have a heck of a time judging where he was going, or climb up to shift and grind the gears because he couldn’t reach the clutch.

After a while, though, the little fellow really hit a stride. He put it in neutral down a winding road and just focused on steering.

To be honest the whole thing sort of scared me. The kid can’t crawl yet and I doubted his ability to hold a clean turn. I played it cool, though, and acted like I trusted him.

On the way home he offered to let his old man take over, and I gladly obliged. I had visions of stopping by In-n-Out for a couple of Double-Doubles and matching chocolate shakes, but mom insisted he stick with breast milk and mashed peas. We relented, but only after giving each other that look. You know the one.

Being a dad is pretty much the best thing ever.
